About Green Chair Dance Group

Picture
We are Green Chair Dance Group. We make dance-theater. We like to throw ourselves into the air, into each other, and onto the floor. Moving is fun. On stage and off, Green Chair’s expansive view of human/body relationships is theoretical, funny, accessible, and constantly changing.

Our dancing draws from diverse backgrounds in improvisation, linguistics, math, and a wide swath of movement techniques. We are fascinated by the aesthetic appeal of ideas, and like to toss them around in the studio. The real work starts when they collide.

Our dance-making is an evolving collaborative process born from the joy (and sweat, and…) of moving together. We constantly zoom in and zoom out, shifting our sense of scale and tripping up our usual ways of seeing the world. The tension of working collectively from distinct, strong personalities is an engine that drives our movement and resonates strongly in our performance presence.

We’ve been on this train together since 2004, and over the years have performed for audiences in the Philadelphia area, up and down the eastern seaboard of the U.S.A, and in Poland. We were recently selected for a White Pines Productions residency in Elkins Park, PA, and several grants from the Swarthmore Project in Theater have let us live, work, and play together for uninterrupted months at a time. Our current creative home is Mascher Space Cooperative, a vibrant experimental movement co-op in the Kensington/Northern Liberties neighborhood of Philadelphia.
